I just had a guy give me a QD18. Motor was a little stuck but got her loose with a touch of elbow grease and lube. Looks like the wrong spark plugs. Can anyone tell me the right plugs needed for that engine. It will also need coils. Darn it!!

Also got a pressure tank from another guy that needs orings. I bought some orings but for the life of me can't get the old ones out. I have tried to pop the brass pieces out from the back side but can't seem to do that either. Also have some good spring hooks but the old orings just don't want to come out. I don't want to break anything. Help Thanks, Mettyfish

Re: QD 18 and pressure tank questions.

You want Champions J6C gapped to 030, coils are readily available.

Removing the old o rings is quite a bear without the proper tools/techniques. I reccomend contacting FR on this forum, he makes a tool to make this process simple and easy.

If this needs to be done immediately, you can make your own tools. The following was from a service bulletin. Cut two pieces of stiff wire #18ga or #17ga about 4 to 5 inches long. Round off and smooth the ends of both pieces. This will prevent damage to connector parts. Next bend loops about 1/2" diameter in the ends of each wire for handles. This completes one of your tools. On the second tool, put a hook on the end, about 1/16" radius.

TO REMOVE O RINGS: Use your straight tool to depress plunger in connector. Insert the hooked tool "flat" under the o ring, twist it "up" to catch the oring, then quickly pull it out from its seat.

TO REPLACE O RINGS: Put some oil on oring and place it on the connector plate. Depress the plunger with the straight tool by pushing it through the center of the o ring. Pinch the o ring together with your fingers and gently stuff it into position in its seat. Use the straight tool to position the o ring positively by pressing against the inside of the oring and moving the tool in a circular motion around the connector opening.

Check them for leaks, if they dont leak you are ready to use.

It has J17LM spark plugs in it. I have some J4C plugs brand new will those work? Thanks, Mark

Alot of plugs will "work", but not at the proper specs they were designed to. Personally, I would get the proper ones, not a big ticket item by any means.

Re: QD 18 and pressure tank questions.

My 72 aftermarket service manual indicates J4C plugs. If the J4C is indeed too cool it may foul easier especially if you troll a lot.Otherwise no worries just pull them and clean as necessary.
My info indicates the 15 uses J6C.
