Had my maiden voyage today on my 8'6" Achilles and 1959 Johnson QD-20 10hp. Not so great.
So I come to you seeking advise...
I spent most of the earlier part of the day test running the Johnny on the kicker bracket of the main boat. Was able to start it pretty quickly/easily, but it was dying at lower rpm's (about below half throttle). I finally got it to idle at low-ish rpm's, and decided to take the test ride before dark set in. Upon first leaving the dock, she stalled about 25yds out, but restarted right away. Got going again, and seemed to be going fine. Got used to the steering/handling, and got up on plane. Went out to the main channel (not really a channel but a small bay off the ICW), and headed north. Wind was out of the north, so I figured it would blow me in the general direction of home if need be. She died again about 1/8 mile away, and restarted. I decided to head back, as she needs some work still. Never made it. Died again just outside my canal, and wouldn't restart for more then a couple of seconds at a time, and that was few and far between tries.
A neighbor was returning from a cruise, and gave me a tow back to my dock.
I just rebuilt the fuel pump, cleaned the filter, and put in brand new plugs. The primer bulb and the fuel line from the tank are old-ish, but appear to be in good working order. The only tank connector I had available was an anti-siphon type. I have a feeling this is my problem. My local WM was out of stock on the non-anti-siphon, but I'll be picking one up tomorrow. Fuel is brand new (about 5 gals left in a 6 gal tank), and the fuel-oil ratio is at 24:1.
What else should I be adjusting/checking/etc., assuming the anti-siphon doesn't fix it?
