I will look for a Force 40 Hp 1996 model tomorrow, the seller says it's good maintained and in good condition. The motor is little used, and will not be used that much of me either.

What is the quality of these motors? Are they troublefree or should I look further?

If it has been well maintained, its just like anything else. Gas/oil mixed right, yearly maintenance administered, etc...

Outboards will last just about forever if maintaned properly.

The '96' would be one of the later "updated" models that featured electronicsand some other components adapted from Mercury Outboards. That made them better and easier to get parts for.

The powerhead is an old design and tends to run a bit dirty. Knowing that, frequent decarbs, see (decarboning your outboard) in FAQ's, will help it live a long life.

As said, with that and the right fuel/oil, it is VERY serviceable and reliable.

Thanx!

I will check it out tomorrow, it says on the cover 'by mercury marine' so that's a somewhat comforting thought...

My beef with a the Chrysler and Force motors is the dwindling parts supply
and the confusion of ignition and fuel system parts.Compare the combined Chrysler/Force parts here at iboats to the Evinrude johnson parts here.
You'll find a single coil that cover some 26 years and hp from 1.5 to 40 hp.
Similar with carb kits.

They are not bad outboards, but:

Finding parts can be tough and finding a shop that will work on them is a lot tougher.

If you buy it be sure to get an appropriate, model specific, Service Manual.

Picked it up today, started on the first go (after it has been lying in a garage for 3 months). Nice condition with all the trimmings+manual.

Hopefully a good buy...

Re: quality/reliability Force outboards?

I had a 1996 Force 120 that was still running perfectly when I sold the boat in 2007. It was always properly maintained, and the only thing it that ever required replacing on it was the starter back in 2004.
