Quarter master AQ130 oil level rising

Im determined to find something wrong with this 1977 AQ130. Ive only taken it out twice and it ran fine. Starts first time, idles well but i was noticing soot and other stuff floating on water especially when i ran it in the bucket. I think it was running rich so i adjusted the carbs and that seemed to eliminate the soot on water and it ticks over faster now. But now i looked at oil level on dipstick and its way above what it should be. I think ( I'm not a mechanic ) i smell gas in the oil. Could this increase in oil level be due to it running rich for so long and gas in the oil? or something more sinister?
Im going to change the oil and take it out again. Can I use 10w 40 from auto store (I'm in southern california so not much moisture) or do i need marine grade? thanks for any info......

It sounds like you're on the right track. Drain the oil and see what you find. Those motors also have oil coolers which can leak and allow water into the oil. If there is water in the oil it should be obvious as the oil should look like chocolate milk.

Not your motor specifically, but some motors with mechanical fuel pumps can leak into the block, but I can't say for sure that your pump could or couldn't...

I don't think running rich would cause the issue. Can you post a few pics of the motor, and the fuel pump. Is there a clear tube coming off the fuel pump? if so, where is it routed?

10w 40 is auto oil is fine.

The fuel pump has a backup syatem for failure.Supposed to have?Nothing about boats is 100%
The clear hose from the pump to the carb is there to direct the flow from a bad diaphragm to the carb.
So if you have a clear hose and there isin't any fuel in it?? Then the pump is probably ok.Again nothing is 100% positive.
If there is no hose then the motos got an automotive pump and it could be bad.
The carb float and needle/seat could be pumping fuel into the intake.
Then down into the crankcase.
The oil cooler could be leaking too. One on this site says that's impossible.Again 100%No.
Remove the flame arrestor and look inside while it's running. Then look inside after you shut it down.
Sometimes the heat after the run can push fuel into the intake.

This engine has no back up. If the pump diaphragm is leaking than the fuel will drip into the bilge. I think you should drain the oil and see what you have. If it is milky then the most likely cause is the oil cooler. Either the brass core, or the O-rings on the end caps. If your lucky it's the Orings. If not you will have to roll the dice and either find someone who can repair it. Or shop for a good used one. The cost of a new one will give you heart failure. The brass core can be removed from the aluminum housing. To test it. But an easy test is to clean all of the oil out of it with it removed, and use the two tubes connected to it to run water through it with a garden hose for a bought five minutes. If you remove the end cap and get water from inside then you know its leaking, and not something else.
