I am changing my lower unit lube and noticed that the O rings that are on it look like nylon. The ones I bought from marine store appear like a regular black rubber type O ring. IS that right... I bought what said on box " OMC lower unit O rings. Please respond if you know so I can continue maintenance. My manual doesn't help and I dont like putting on parts that dont look like what came off. Thanks
either/or reply here or Jbeaux2000@aol.com

There are two types. The oring ones are used on a special screw. The nylon ones are used on a flat backed screw. They are not interchangable. V

Nylon style you have are better.O'rings for fill screw washers wear out too fast and react with temperature changes loosing elasticity.

nylon work better and once in a while you can use them over in a pinch. As long as they are not split or been gorillad.

Ok, I have a question. I went to get seal replacements for the L/U of my 86 Johnson 50 hp, and they gave me the flat nylon ones of which you speak. My fill screws are recessed, clearly looking like they are made for O-rings, and there was no way those flat nylon washers were going to work.
I took them into NAPA, and got O-rings to fit, and put it back together.
My question is should I try to replace the fill screws to flat faced ones where the nylon washers work, or will the O-rings be ok?
I have no idea how long the prior O-rings were in, but there were no leaks, and the oil looked very black.

John

plywoody,Not sure whether the plugs are alike besides the "o" ring undercut on yours. If "o"rings are removed and changed once a season should be no problem keeping the style you have.Next time you have one off swing it by the dealer and see if the other style matches.

In our little podunk town, we don't have a "dealer" really. At least not one that knows anything.
I did take my filler screws in when I realized that there was no way in the world the nylon ones they sold me would work, or seal it.
They looked at it, said "yep, those seals won't work. We don't have any that fit those screws- they aren't very popular" I asked them if they had different screws I should use, and they said "Nope".

so I went to the local auto parts store, got the O-rings (actually a whole package of them) and they seem to work fine, but it has not been in the water since, as I was in the process of winterizing it.

If it was important, I would buy new screws and replace them--they can't be very much money.

Would you in my place?

John

plywoody , without seeing the "o'rings you used its difficult for me to advise using them.I do know that they need to be an interference fit.Not too much or they'll split.I would try to locate some that will accept nylon washers before putting in water or at least the stock "o"rings.

The O-rings I used are 1/8" thickness, with a OD of 1/2" and an ID of 3/8". They appear thicker than the ones that were replaced, but seemed to fit the screws that I had perfectly.

I'll be up in the big city (Seattle) next week, and I'll get new screws and washers.

Thanks much

John

OMC started this oring crusade in the mid too late 80's and kept it up for several years until,I would suspect, that too many consumers complained that the plugs where too hard to remove. If you are looking for the oring OEM # it is 333572,nylon washer is 311598 but do not use the recessed oring plugs with the nylon washers.Get the flat plugs and they are easy to find.
