Hi all, I just got a 1975 Tahiti Ski Boat with a Volvo Penta AQ130c / 270 combo.

I have a list of questions/queries/problems that I need addressed. So here goes:

1. The previous owner complained that the engine would overheat after 10 minutes. So I started going thru the cooling system and found that the sea-water filter's strainer was blocked and that melted slighty out of shape. I cleared the blockage and straightened the strainer the best I could. It does not leak.
Can I by-pass this filter if I only plan using the boat on a fresh water lake?

2. The previous owner fitted a new impeller which pumps water just fine but the water pump screw is missing and water spits out.
Can i use another screw of the same size and pitch or does it have to be a special one and what is it's purpose?

3. The tilt system does not work, but I have checked the motor on it's own and I can get it to spin in both directions but when fitted to the tilt system the directly to a 12v source the motor makes a ticking sound and very slowly moves the tilt ram.
Is the motor shot? Can it be fixed?

4. The relays on the tilt system are shot, no clicking from either one when trying to operate the tilt system. I am looking into replacing the relays but not sure what to replace them with. One has four connectors and the other has five connectors but everywhere I look the replacements for both are the same relay.
It this correct or am I missing something?

5. Can the tilt system up and down switch be replaced, if so with what. The current switch is a two-way toggle with only 3 connections and one of them is for the warning light.

I have more questions, but this is enough to get started with.

Thanks to all that reads this and helps me :)

Re: Queries with AQ130c/270 combo

1. I think I'd try to use a strainer if you can find one. My boats have not had them. Mine were both Volvos, so they must have thought your motor needed it.

2. If your talking about the small screw holding the cover on the pump, I beleive they are brass. Bring in one of the others to the hardware store, match it up.

3. I've been working on my Tilt mechanism over the last week or so. Have a look at these links.

Does this look like your Tilt assembly?

If it were me, I'd pull it out of the boat and break it down as I did in the link below. Mine seemed to work okay until I took it apart and found a few issues. Its simple to take apart and put together.

Here's a thread I started the other day concerning the tilt

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=307304

4. If you have the black box type like the one in the link, the relays are the same.

5. You should be able to test the tilt switch, I'm not sure how to however. Maybe Don will post a link to the manual so you can see the wiring diagram.

Hope this help a bit.

Good Luck!

The missing screw is not one of the ones holding pump cover on, it on the top on the pump housing from the engine, if I look down thru the hole I can see the pump's drive shaft.

Yes, my tilt system does look this, but my motor has 4 wires coming from it.

I will study your thread before taking the tilt system out.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks for the links Don. ;)
