My question is concerning the pull starter on this engine......we could not pull the rope to save our lives.......so we take off the cowl and looking at the top of the recoil there is a lever that we lifted and now we can pull the rope.

What is this lever and how does it work.....in looking at it...... it seems to be attached to some other linkage but cannot seem to see how this all works.

Any light on this lever and how it works would be great..........Thanks

Re: Question 1959 Evinrude Lark 35hp

That is the old style lockout lever assembly. It's purpose is to jam the manual starter pulley if the throttle is advanced too far, especially if the engine is in gear. Many boaters simply remove it from the other linkage as it can be a bear to adjust if one doesn't know exactly what they're doing.... BUT keep in mind that this does away with the safety feature it was designed for.

Ok I do understand that it locks the pull rope.....but what is the safety feature?
If I advance the throttle to far......why do I care if the pull rope is locked?

So you can't start the engine in gear with throttle advanced. Thay way maybe you woun't through yourself out of the boat or run over something or somebody.

Hmmmmmm. quite the visual here......A boat starting in gear and a boater being thrown off the back. By the way, why doesn't this motor have electric start?

You tell us. Was it supposed to have electric start when you bought it?

Re: Question 1959 Evinrude Lark 35hp

It does have electric start.....but we were looking at the motor just today wondering why we could not pull the rope.

Then after we manually lifted the lever we were able to pull the rope.
But after we were wondering why....what was the purpose of this lever.

Now I know thanks to the great support here........mind you I will have many a questions
as I am trying to learn all I can.

Thanks again
