Looking at buying a 2000 model Johnson 150 I do not think it is a Ficht. It has no markings on motor that I.D. it as a ficht ( just silver with Johnson 150 ). I have heard horror stories about the Fichts ( true or not).
My question is were there 150's made in 2000 that werent the Ficht type? If so I believe that this one is just a carb. 150 Johnson, this being the case is this a good motor? I blew up an 1988 Evinrude XP 150 and want to replace it with this one . The motor compression was good and the guy is asking a reasonable price. Good Motor for my 88 Champion bass boat??? Please help..

Howdy, gotafish.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Yes, there were carbed 150s made by Johnson in 2000. They were good engines when new.

Thanks for the info and the welcome!! That makes me feel better about moving forward with the purchase, not looking for bulletproof just trying not to pick a lemon...I need to make a decision soon to buy this before someone else snatches it up...... Any other thoughts out there?

OK I bought the OB we were discussing . I hope it was a good choice, I did look at all my options and this seemed the best espicially since I did not get a bunch of poor opinions about the motor. Thanks JB for your input!

I do have one other question though:
I never added a water seperator to my other motors fuel system ( I regret that as I think it could have contributed to the failure). I am going to add one to my boay before I run the replaement motor. Are these really effective? Or should I just discard unused fuel after each use ( if I wasnt going to run it again soon)? Also do Temperature gauges work on OB motors effectivly and what temp should this 150 Johnson run at?
I DO NOT WANT TO TRASH ANOTHER POWERHEAD...........

Install a fuel-water separating filter in the boat and use a fuel stablizer such as Evinrude 2+4, Startron, Stabil, etc. all the time to protect the fuel when not using the boat.

a real shame to hear about that 88 XP 150...that was a great motorthe late 80s and early 90s were really good years for outboard motors in general...a lot of them still running strong and parts are comparablly cheap.

Thanks guys for the info so far. It was a shame that the 88 failed on me, I loved that motor and I love the boat, that is why I decided to put another motor on instead of selling what was left and buying a new outfit. Well that, and the fact that to replace it with a quality unit would be 30K and I do not need another house note.
I wanted to have the 88' rebuilt but it had already been bored to the max so I would have to get another power head and that was going to run 5K out the door. I found this motor for half that and it checked out, so I went that way. I am thinking of holding on to the 88' and trying to rebuild it myself as a project to learn from. Or maybe parting it out to recoop some of my loss. Any body need parts for an 88 OMC V6 I got some good stuff other than the powerhead ( cheap to you guys)...

Thanks for the replies, others please chime in on my questions if you like..:):)
