Question about a 90s Tohatsu 40hp (should I trade?)

Ok, I've got a dealer that will take my '83 Chrysler 50hp in trade for
his early 90s Tohatsu 40hp (two cylinder), plus $250.00. I've also got to purchase
a prop, but controls are included. I know virtually nothing about nothing,
although I'm learning and have been getting some really good advice in
the Chrysler forum and have begun to do some minor to semi-major
repairs.

Having said all that, for me it's gotta be dependable and I'm not 100%
vested in the Chrysler. I will add that I have another Chrysler 50 for parts,
but it's been rode rather hard, but that is a plus when it comes to swapping
things out. I'm a fan of import vehicles, but does the same apply to
outboard engines? Of course, everything you find is either 100% for or
against, so I thought I would ask the guys who own these motors.

It will be going on a 1984 Rivier Tri-Hull (look for an upcoming restore thread
in 2011) and I'm not worried about skiing or anything like that. I'm using
the boat as a 'flats boat' as I live on the West Coast of Florida. I'm north
of Tampa so the Continental Shelf goes out quite a ways and we can walk
almost a mile, if that tells you anything. Advise me please, and what should
I be leary of, and where the early models reliable? Are there historical issues
to look for? Like anything purchased down here, i'm sure it's been in the salt
and I'm pretty comfortable with knowing what to pick out there.
