Temp gauge went to normal and
heater was OK, warmed up OK.

This was OK for 400 miles, now today , gauge went to normal but
cold air only again through heater ducts.

Heater hoses was one was very warm, one was cold.

This car has the old style sliding bar on dash. to set temp of heater,
NOT the Auto Climate Control.,

Any suggestions?

stoneyjoe

Re: QUESTION ABOUT CAR HEATER

If the water is circulating through the heater core both hoses should be warm. Chances are the cable is broken or the the do-hicky it attatches to. In the heater hose there should be an actuation valve that the cable hooks up to. Find it and move it manually and see if you get heat. It is in line of one of the heater hoses

Did you Re-Check the coolant Level ???

If it's air-bound, the heater is the 1st to loose flow.............

Re: QUESTION ABOUT CAR HEATER

My bet is the new heater core is clogged again. Remove inlet and outlet hoses. Backflush (opposite of water flow) new heater core into a clean container. If you have a lot of particulate matter, it's time for a cooling flush and fresh antifreeze.
If the core comes up clean, perhaps you had an air lock as Bondo has mentioned.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT CAR HEATER

The diverter valve on the heater hose close to the firewall vaccum hose off or valve not opening is pretty sure a good bet

Re: QUESTION ABOUT CAR HEATER

The valve is what it was on my pickup, looked like it was working, but when I pulled it and looked inside, the butterfly was closed and did not move. They don't cost a lot, you could put a pipe back in its place as a test.

Re: QUESTION ABOUT CAR HEATER

I took Station wagon to my mechanic just now. He thinks heater valve needs replacement. He took the hose off the return on heater core and "filled it" as the water circulated. This helped but heat was just warm, not hot!
Also he thinks system might need flushing to renove any old scales.

nomoe99

HEATER UPDATE.
Mechanic back flushed and cleaned system.
Added a new valve.
Now works well !!!!!!
He thinks scaling blocked new core and old valve.
Have driven 300 miles, all OK with heater. Just hope no more scale build up clogs system.
Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! You always have the right answers for me!
nomoe99
