I have been doing a lot of searching about deck replacement and was wondering, if you only put resin on the top side of the deck what keeps the bottom from rotting out again in a few years?

Re: Question about deck replacement

Also has anyone used anything other than plywood? A guy at my work was telling me his dad rebuilt his deck using a product called divilasite(sp?). Thanks for any advice, first boat that I've owned and this looks like quite a project.

Re: Question about deck replacement

I have come to find out there are several alternatives to plywood, all with varying costs...

TACO.. umm... 1/4x24x54....$64.99 (No tacos on MY boat.. your feelings may vary)
STARBOARD..1/4x24x54 .... $58.59
West Marine Acrylic... Priced on Quote..

I believe these to all be the same type of acrylic material, they are marketing them as marine lumber replacements... don't have any reviews on them yet..

I am planning on using Plywood, glassed on BOTH sides (full encapsulation) and vacuum bagged as I don't plan on my boat going anywhere any time soon, and don't plan to EVER have to do the deck again!

I MAY consider seacast for the stringers / transom if I have to do any repairs to them, but what I have seen so far they are looking GOOD...

I'm using a material from Coosa Composites called Bluewater 20 (http://www.coosacomposites.com/bluewater.html). It is used by several high-end boat manufacturers. It is not as expensive as everyone thinks. I payed $130 per 4x8 sheet of 1/2-inch (marine grade ply was $80/sheet). As a bonus its 45% lighter than ply and you save a little money in resin as well. My deck will end up costing me about $150 more than using plywood, but I never have to worry about rot again.

Pouring stringers using Nidabond this week. Hopefully I'll be putting the Coosa board down the following week.
