Question about Etec binnacle mount controls

I have been searching for a motor to replace my blown 98 115 Johnson and have located an Etec 115 that barely fits into my budget. The problem is it comes with a side mount control which is unuseable with my center console. I was wondering if it is possible to use the wireing harness with my 98 binnacle control? Buying an Etec binnacle control would just price me out of it.

No reason they shouldn't work. From 1996 and up they should all be the same.

Re: Question about Etec binnacle mount controls

I brought this back up because I wanted to be sure.

I went over to deal on the motor today, an 07 etec 115. It comes with a side mount control box and no oil tank. The lady at the shop that is selling the motor tried to tell me my binnacle control would not work because my wireing does not have a system check gauge. She was trying to sell me a whole new control box and oil tank which would add several hundred dollars to the price of the motor and price me right out of it.

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that it would be as simple as pulling the key switch and wires out of the side mount control box and putting them in my binnical mount? I'd like to make a deal on this motor and it fits into my budget if I don't have to put a bunch of additional money into it. BTW what does an oil tank cost?

Your '98 should have had either a System Check tachometer or gauge. That was required for engine warranty. You need it for your E-TEC, for sure. Don't leave land without one !

The wiring is MWS and it will work with either a system check gauge (plug) or a standard gauge (wired). The lady was not being honest with you or confused the issue. Either that or you somehow have pre 95 wiring on your 98 engine.

Thanks, what about the oil tank? Since I don't have an oil tank and the engine does not come with one where can I get an oil tank for a 115 etec?

Ask your dealer. We have plenty from boats we have rigged with new engines. You can probably get one for half price. They are the same ones that were used for the carb models.

The wiring harness and controls should still be the same.
