Im having trouble with some of my gauges. stock setup on a 1997 astro 1700 bass boat with a 1997 force 120
model h-120412td, late serial number. the trim gauge jumps erratically when trimming up or down, always ends up
being accurate but never moves in a smooth motion, sorta spikes up & down.the tachometer seems to stick sometimes.
every once in a while it works right, usually the first few minutes it always is accurate. after that when I stop it may stick
on 2000 rpm when I idle along. when I take off again it adds that 200 to what Im running. the speedo always works right.
the rectifier checks out and the batteries are brand new marine starting and deep cycle trolling respectively. any ideas what
else the problem could be?thanks

metal,
sure about those connections?

there's some gauge threads in the archives that'll help you out. I just wrapped up a pesky gas gauge with the info I got. run a search with the words gauges+trim+tach or tachometer.

I'll see if I can find the link to the company that makes gauges down in south florida, it had lot of pretty good troubleshoot procedures

Re: question about gauges...

try these threads

Power trim & tilt July 23, 2002
also, Joe Reeves, the OMC God, writes this test procedure in November 11, 2002 thread:
With the ignition key in the on position, run a small jumper wire from the "S" (sensor) terminal of the gauge to a ground. If the meter pegs full up, the gauge is okay and you have power to the gauge. In which case, the most likely suspect is the sender.

To test the sender, trace the wires back from the sender to a plug in connector, and disconnect it. Hook up a ohm meter to the sender wires, set the meter to low ohms, then move the sender lever up and down. You should get a smooth movement on the meter with no dead spots or jerky movement.

good luck
