Well, the guy that was supposed to do it for me dropped off the face of the earth and I got impatient and started doing it myself. I figured if I can rebuild an automatic transmission, I can figure out the lower unit. Everything was going pretty good and am in the process of putting it back together. Only one problem.....Without going into details on how I did it, the prop shaft bearing housing (I think that is what it is called) got broke. My question is, when I get a new one, will have need to measure anything to determine the proper reverse gear shim (the one that goes between the reverse gear and the prop shaft bearing housing) or can I use the same one. Oh yeah, this is a '91 40hp Evinrude.
On a side note....Is the shift rod length measurement just done from the top of the gearcase? My manual gives the length, but says to use the OMC tool to measure it. Just for reference, it says 21 and 15/16" for the proper length. Thanks for all the help.
