Question about Mercury Gear Housing

Mercury is replacing the "gear housing" on my 25 hp 4 stroke. My question is, what exactly is the gear housing? What does it consist of? Internal and external parts or internal parts only? What is the difference between the housing and casing? Thanks for the info.

That's a good question to ask them. You're paying the bill.

My interpretation is that it would be the outer shell of the lower unit (ie housing). No internal parts.

The complete assembly is commonly referred to as a lower unit.
