Hey guys,

I'm going to see a boat this weekend that has a 1988 Johnson 88 SPL. The current owner sent me a picture of the model number located on one of the metal plugs on the powerhead. The model number printed is "J88NSLCCC." It's my understanding that the model number should be "J88MSLCCC" designating it as a "special," is this just a typo from the factory or does the "N" designate something else?

There is nothing " special " about these motors.-----Just the 90 HP model without oil injection or power trim and tilt and marketed as special.-----Power trim was added by dealers or owners.

Thanks racerone I understand that my question was more about the model number stamped on the motor being different from what is listed online

I see ---N----designated for " opposite rotation " for some motors.-----But I do not think the 88 model was ever marketed with that option.
