hello, i am looking to buy a 18' sportcraft center console with a full transom but requires a transom bracket to hold the outboard, wich has long since been removed. boat is for sale without motor or bracket, both are gone. i have motors, but no bracket, anyways....

i have seen the brackets by stainless marine and gil, but heres a question.. how much setback will i need on a full transom to tilt my 115 v4 outa the way. some ive seen have 36" setbacks and this seesm like a lot, not to mention a lot of MONEY$$$$$$.

i wont need to tilt it up all the way, just enough to safely operate the vessel and since its on a bracket with a set back, cant i raise the motor a few inches above the bottom of the keel and wont this help me in having to lift the motor when i travel into the shallow waters around here, tampa bay area?

could i use a manual jack plate with a 14 inch setback? i can get one of theese real cheap, like 100 bucks, versus a full transom bracket is almost 1200 bucks...would this be feasible? anybody have similar setups?

Sure you can use a jackplate. You just have to be real careful about the tilting deal. I have a buddy who has a full transom Carolina Skiff with a 10" Bob's hydraulic. As careful as he is, the hood has a crack in it. Adding a couple of 2" spacers would help. The V4 cf needs about 22" if I remember correctly. The 60 degree needs less.

Another option is the Dania flea market. Starts tomorrow and goes thru Sunday. There's always lots of brackets there.

As far as how much set back it would depend on the motor combination, like Dhadley said. as far as hieght, I saw somewhere that for every foot back, the anti-ventilation plate (cavitation plate) can efectively be raised 1 inch above the bottom of the hull, i.e. 1 foot back, 1 inch up; 3 feet back, 3 inches up. Also the further back you go with the motor it changes the center of gravity on the boat and also the leverage on the stern.

The general rule of thumb is for every 5" you go back you can go up 1". Providing the X dimension was correct to start with.

You could build your own brack out of plywood, fiberglass and resin. I though a guy did that here on iBoats but not sure.

1200 For a bracket seems extreme to me but so does a 4 pole holder know as a rocket launcher. :)
