Question about outdrive shift cable....

As an FYI I have a 1968 Inline 6 cyl 250c.i. 160HP GM engine with a MC 160 outdrive with 24/24 gear count 1.65 ratio.

Is the shift cable one piece? meaning, does the shift cable go all the way from the shift handle to the shift lever in the outdrive? Or does the cable go into the transom plate mechanism and another shift cable comes from the transom plate mechanism to the outdrive?

I am asking because I am about to put my 1968 pre-alpha 160 drive back on in a week or so but am not clear on the cabel situation. I recently changed the shifter out and the shift cable at the shifter moved easily and smooth by hand. So it seems that it would be a good cable. But after that cable reaches the mechanism on the transom plate is there another cable that goes from the transom plate to the outdrive? Or is it just a lever that changes the gears in the outdrive. Meaning, when being told to change the shift cable while I have the drive off and before putting the new cable bellows on, put a new shift cable, does this person mean the entire cable coming from the shifter up front or some short cable that I am not aware of?

Re: Question about outdrive shift cable....

No they are referring to the shift cable that goes from the shift bracket at the engine, where ever yours is mounted- to the outdrive. you should have 2-cables shift cables attached to the shift bracket, one from helm shifter, the other to the drive.

Do you have any idea how old the shift cable is to the drive?

How long have you owned the boat?
