Question about relays

Last time I used my 100hp johnson 1987 the engine did not trim down. I change the relay with each other and it did go down but not up. So I figured :) that I had a bad relay but later that afternoon the engine did trim up  . So do relays go bad and die  or do they function intermitently? Right now the engine wont trim up and it takes a few clicks for it to go down. Any input is gladly accepted.

Re: Question about relays

Could be an itermittent problem with the relay. If the good one works both ways when swapped, replace the bad one. They don't nessesarily fail altogether. Make sure connections are clean.

Re: Question about relays

I had a problem with intermittent relays that I thought was a switch. It seemed I could always use the switch on the motor, but the switch on the control lever didn't always work. Then the relay failed completely. When the relay was replaced both switches worked flawlessly. Just coincidence about the switches I guess.
