Chains by far are more superior, but they have always been a hassle to put on and take off.
Studded tires are for more icey conditions than hard pack or deep snow, but they do come through most of the time (cross fingers)

What conditions do you have mostly and what kind of vehicle??
There is nothing that says you cannot put chains on studded tires.

Re: Question about studded tires

I thought studs had been outlawed because of severely damaging pavement. I used them back in the late 60s and had good luck on a '68 Bronco V8.

On the other hand, I have used chains when conditions were too severe for studs. . .deep drifts. The advantage is that you can take them off for dry driving conditions.

If I lived where snow and ice are the norm, I'd have studded tires (legal here in winter). For serious snow, tire chains are better. When I lived in snow country, I never had to chain up my Jeep. Good luck.

I'd say chains for you since in your area you're unlikely to be snowed in again any time soon. Studs are only really good for ice and don't have any real effect in deep snow.

I last used chains about 50 years ago (in Iowa) when we had a couple of years in a row with heavier than normal snow and the county road dept could take several days to get to our road.

There have been some advances and improvements in tire chains over the years but I imagine they are still pretty much a pain in the butt. With any luck, by the time you can get your hands on some chains and put them on, you won't need them any more.

Re: Question about studded tires

Where I live, we pretty much run studs just about year around, I have not put chains on my car in over 5 years, studded tires in combination with a good quality mud/snow design tire works great even in deeper snow. That said, if I lived in OK, I would opt for a good quality cable design chain set up, yes they are a pain to put on, but with the frequency of snow in your area, chains are going to be the better option.

Me, I have snow on the ground from about mid October to late May most years, and have had snow in every single month of the year..
