question about the size of my outboard

This is my first post. I just recently bought a 1960 Starcraft Viking project boat. I got the boat, trailer, and 50HP Force outboard for $250.

I'm wondering if the motor is the right physical size for my transom. I'll attempt to attach a photo to show what my question is, but in general...I'm thinking that the prop is too far below the bottom of my transom. For reference, the centerline of the prop is 10 inches below the lowest part of the transom. You might also be able to see in the photo that whoever mounted this motor put some 2"x2" spacers on top of the transom to jack the motor up a bit.

Before I spend any time and money on getting this motor working - I'm just wondering if it's even appropriate for my boat.

Does anybody have any advice for this part of my restoration?

Thanks

Re: question about the size of my outboard

Yes, the motor leg is too long for your transom. Take a tape measure and measure the transom vertically at the center line.

15" = short shaft
20" = Long shaft
25" = extra long shaft
30" = XX long shaft

My guess is that motor has a 20" leg and your transom is 15".

You can still use that motor on that boat but it won't perform as well and you may get some water spray back over the transom. Also shallow water driving will be a pain.

Re: question about the size of my outboard

The transom measures just above 15 inches at it's highest.

I think I'll keep an eye open for a different motor while I'm working on the rest of the boat.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: question about the size of my outboard

If you notice how high the motor is mounted (gap between the top of the mount and the top of the transom) you will understand why this is an incorrect application. The motor is mounted as high as it can go. If the motor runs well, just look for a short leg lower unit and swap it out. Then lower the motor as required so the AV plate is flush to an inch or so above the keel.

good used short shafts are hard to find; people keep them. It seems a lot of older boats were built for short shafts, but hulls often outlast motors. So grabone if you see it!

You got 50 HP on that !!!!:eek: Looks a little much for that hull.
I stand to be corrected though.

Mine is WAY higher than that and there is no wood blocking it up. I could fit my whole hand between the bottom of the engine bracket and the top of the transom.
