I recently removed the thermostat cover on my 88 Yamaha 90 to check the thermostat. I removed the pressure relief valve and spring to clean it any debris and lost the compression spring somewhere along the way. I ordered one but it still has not arrived. Would it be ok to run without it for a day or should I try to find some kind of spring to install in there for the time being. BTW there was not a thermostat in there either.

Not a good idea. Without the thermostat your motor will be running cold and that will not be efficient. I hope you now have a thermostat. All parts on the motor have a purpose.I would not risk running it without the spring.
