Hi, recently I installed a rebuilt power head on a neighbors bass boat. It is a 2002 Mercury XR6. The motor came with the timing retarded 10 degrees from max. The motor has been broken in but runs a little low on top end rpm. <5200. Once the motor has been broken in should the timing be returned to factory specs? Nothing in the documentation references this issue.

How did you check the timing? Did motor come with ignition parts installed? Documentation state timing was retarded 10 degrees?

I verified timing with the instructions printed in the service manual. Also, the manual states that you need to retard the timing after a rebuild. I removed the power head for him and he sent it complete to a company that rebuilt it. They wanted everything left on the motor. It came back complete ready to install and run.

Follow the instructions given in the manual that the rebuilder provided or call the rebuilder for assistance. Not that the info you get here will be bad but it may cause you to void the warranty.

I would call the rebuilder an ask about the timing.
