Question about water gaskets?

My 1996 90hp Evinrude E90TLEDA has an overheating issue at high speeds. I have already changed the thermostats, relief valves and complete waterpump overhaul to no avail which leads me to believe I need to replace the water deflectors and clean out the water jackets. I know I will need new water jacket gaskets. My question is, in the iboats store there are two gaskets, a port and starboard. Each come in packages of two. I looked at the Evinrude website and it shows I need Part# 318335 which is the starboard according to iboats. Will I also need 318334 (the port according to iboats)? I cannot find it listed for the exploded view of my motor. I hope someone can help get me back on the water soon.

Not really the answer you want but any time I find myself in this situation I email the company I'm about to purchase from and try to get them to answer. Based on how I feel about the answer I either order it or do more research but the bottom line is if it's wrong I've at least got something to hold against them since I ordered what they suggested.

Are you running lean? That could cause the overheating as well. Have you tested the sending units to make sure they switch at the correct temperature?

Thanks for your response. I have heard that running lean could cause overheating, but I'm not sure how to test if it is getting the correct mixture. I know it is using oil because the amount in the reservoir changes. About the sending units, how do I test them? I felt the heads when the alarm when off and it felt hot to me. This motor was purchased second hand and is primarily used in salt/brackish water. I'm not sure if the previous owners flushed it every time. Any help anyone has to offer would be appreciated.

I'm not familiar enough with your model to know where the sending units are located and whether you have one or two but basically you suspend it in a pot of oil (don't let it touch the pot and be sure it is fully submerged) on the stove and monitor the temperature of the oil as you heat it. Using an ohmmeter you'll connect it to both ends of the sending unit (the wire and the unit itself) and at a certain temperature it should switch (ground out).

If you have the shop manual or even an aftermarket manual like SELOC it will describe this process. You basically need to find out at what temperature the sending unit is being grounded (that's how they work, they ground) and then compare that to the manufacturer's specs on what temperature it should ground and then also reset.

If it's bad be patient and purchase it off eBay. I've seen them there brand new for $10 + ship whereas OMC is $50+.

Concerning running lean maybe someone else can add some suggestions on that since I'm not familiar with your exact model.

Try ishopmarine.com. You can buy all the 318335's you need for about 3 bucks each. According to the BRP site, you'll need 2. 318334 is not listed for your engine.
