Question concerning cylinder boring

The VRO went out on my '90 120 HP Evinrude and resulted in 2 scuffed cylinder walls (2&4). My outboard mechanic friend says we only need to bore the two cylinders. My motorhead brother in-laws said I am nuts if I don't have all 4 bored. Obviously just boring 1 or 2 cylinders can been done, correct? Is there an advantage by doing all 4? It will still perform fine with 2 being done, won't it?

Re: Question concerning cylinder boring

Hi PBUNT, I'm not sure the vro caused your problem, people are quick to blame that system, because of earlier problems, those are pretty much gone now. As for the boring job, the manufacturer says it's ok to do just one or two, I have found though, that it is better to do all the cylinders. Nothing is worse than spending the money to repair the bad cylinder/s and having a different cylinder go a short time later. Especially when most of the labor is teardown and re-assembly

Thank you Iceman for your help. Probably too late to do all 4 now; went in on Tuesday for boring. I wish the VRO was alright cause I hear it will cost over $200 for new one.
