I'm in the process of installing the 400 SBC in my redneck fishin' boat and I noticed that there are provisions for dowel pins on the flywheel cover. Since this is at least the third re-power this vessel has had, I don't remember it ever having dowels in the block. I have looked at the mercruiser parts manual and cannot find them anywhere. Did it ever have them of am I just worrying about nothing.? I think it started life as a 200 Alpha. The hull is an 88' model.

Re: Question for Bondo

Thanks. I knew you would know. I took the block that came in it to a machinist and was told that it was cracked. I never got the dowels out before he scrapped it so I didn't remember if it had them or not. This time I am assembling the engine completely before installing it. I'm glad I checked the starter engagement before I got it into the boat. It took 3/32 of shim to work and it would not have been fun to find this out after it was in the boat. I noticed you have decided it's easier to work on a starter with the motor out of the boat as well.

Re: Question for Bondo

I'm getting too old to stand on my head in the motor box to do things that are more easily done with the engine on a stand. Age forces us to use our brains instead of our muscles. How is your 383 twin turbo project comming along?

Re: Question for Bondo

Hi Eddie...

I got an original shop manual for my rig (SBC V6) over the winter. I was shocked  to see that OMC listed their part #, but also referred you to your neighborhood Chevy parts house for most of the block related parts and engine internals. When it came to motors, only 15% or so of the parts were 'marine" or OEM specific. All the rest were GM standard parts. I would think your dowels would be too.

Re: Question for Bondo

You are right KaGee. I picked up a couple of dowels at the Chevy dealer this morning. As of this afternoon my rowboat is now a powerboat again as I have the new motor sitting in her. If the rain will hold off I might get to hear her run tomorrow.
