I have a 2003 Johnson 140 and I have about 10-12 hours on the motor.I was going to change the oil for the first time and was wondering how difficult to get to the oil filter....looks like 6 screws for that lower cover. Also I was thinking of using Mobil 1 15W-50 Synthetic. Is there anything else the Dealer does for the 10 hr check? I would like to do this myself. You sound like you really know your Suzuki/Johnson 4 strokes....Thanks for your help

Oil filter change is like you said, just remove the side cover. The Mobil 1 would be fine but I would hold off until your 2nd oil change just to make sure the rings get seated before you put the really slippery stuff in. Thats about it..I always look around for any loose bolts etc.. I rarely find any but if anything didn't get tight at the factory it usually shows up in the first 10 - 20 hrs. Enjoy and please don't catch all the fish now that you can sneak up on them quietly!!

Re: Question for FridaysMarine

Sorry if my question offended you, Musky5, but I asked for an important bit of info that you did not include in your post.

I meant to ask about a Service Manual. If you intend to perform periodic maintenance yourself, you need to know what to do to what, and how to do it.

For example: My DF70 Manual lists several things besides oil and filter change to do at the first (20 hour) check, including checking valve clearance, replacing lower unit (gearcase) oil, tighten nuts and bolts and others. I would be surprised if the DF140 did not require similar procedures.

In addition, of course, the Service Manual will offer excellent advice and guidance if problems should occur.

Good luck. :)
