Joe, I am working on a 1970 Evinrude 60Hp with type V electric shift. S/N J10030, Model 60073D. I stripped the original threads using a harmonic balancer puller and a propane torch. Retapped to 3/8-16 and got a propane torch rated to 3500
degrees. Applied heat and cranked down on puller. Still no movement. How do I get this thing out without breaking something or melting the outer housing?
Thanks

Normally a special puller is used, specifically designed for pulling those carriers, also propellers. Back in my day 1960's-1990's, that tool was made and sold by Bob Kerr Tools in Orlando, Florida. No, I don't have mine any longer. I think that Bob Kerr is still in business but most likely under new management.

Now, another method that I've used from time to time as have other mechanics... is a heavy duty slide hammer with a hook on the business end of the slide rod. Those early model carriers need the heat not only around the rear portion that you see as soon as you remove the propeller... heat is also needed at the large "O" Ring seal area. If this doesn't break it loose... how you get it out is anybody's guess.

However, drilling out those retaining holes was a mistake and will now, no doubt, result in a need to replace the carrier as the "O" Rings of the retaining bolts will not be able to seal properly. Good used ones are usually available.

You did remove the 4 bolts that hold the bearing housing in place ?----Salt water motor ?

Joe,
The holes I drilled out were the two threaded holes on the prop end of the carrier, not the four retaining screws.

Can you post a picture of what you have? There were a few designs of the carrier and I'm not sure which one you have. Is the outer end a completely circular ring, like a spool?

I was pretty well puzzled in thinking that you might drill out two of those four retaining holes... BUT... that that engine going on 48 years old, I was thinking of the original style carrier.

Was also wondering where in the hell did you get that long drill bit! :)
