Mark42---I have a 71 MFG that I'm working on. Want to change steering wheel. Is it a standard 3/4 inch tapered shaft- wheel removed by prying off center cap and removing nut? Wheel is very brittle and needs changing. Would like to get one before removing old. By the way---great job on your restore! Watched your video and can't wait to get out in mine. Has a "66" 50hp Merc. on it. I'm getting ready to attempt installing a new impeller rebuild kit. Wish me luck!!! Dan

Rocky, remove the center cap, back nut off till it is just above the top surface of the bolt. then place your knees behind the wheel, putting force on it, and give the nut a good rap with a hammer. if this does not work, you will need to rent, borrow a wheel puller, that has the arms to go into the space behind the hub.

Yep, what Tashasdaddy said.

Post us some pics of your work. These old MFG's are a lot of fun for fairly little money. Let us know how the trip goes. Good Luck!

I tried posting pics but I got a message saying that the file exceeded the limit? How do I remedy that? I've e-mailed pics before and never had a problem. Dan

Rocky,

That Niagara looks to be in nice shape. One thing you should check on is the bow eye. They tend to loosen up over time, so climb up under the dash and check the block the bow eye is attached to. If the whole block is loose, just remove it, sand hull and block, then epoxy back in place. Then after it is fully set, tighten the bow eye bolts.

If you want to clean up the old wheel, there are spray paints made just for plastics now. or you can try polishing by hand with polishing compound.

I think these old MFG's lasted so long becasue the hulls were made in a steel matched die under high pressure and heat. And the floors tend not to rot out because many of them were fiberglass stringers and floor.

That lapstrake hull handles really nice, tracks straight as an arrow on the water. That 50hp should put you at 28-30 mph, depending on load. And it planes at low speeds easily.

Not too much you can do about the fogged windshield short of changing out the plastic (see my windshield project).

Nice to see you have all the original hardware, including the transom light.

What are your plans for seats? The original seats were set very low, so that your head was below the windshield, but if you are setting it up for fishing, you probably want to sit higher.

Re: Question for Mark42..........

Thanks for the tip on the bow eye- I'll check that out. As far as the seats go-I bought white high-back seats fron West Marine, and cleaned up and repainted the 7" pedestals that were in it.{the seats were all rotten}For now I'm going to use a couple of lawn chairs for fishing. Last nite I ordered the stealth wheel from iboat marine store. Should have that Fri.

I put in new steering cables and repaired the wiring in the boat and on the trailer, and bought new fuel line and primer bulb. Next things to do are installing an impeller rebuild kit, and repairing a split in the fiberglass on the floor. The wood deck underneath is fine. Just went out and checked the bow eye- it's tight! No problem there.

Trailer has a broken weld, my brother-in-law is a welder and is going to repair that for me. It's a 1951 tilt trailer that needs cleaning up and paint.

Can't wait to get it in the water!!! Dan
