Going back in the posts to 09/16/2003, I see you guys had that same sceeching noise I do when trimming my Honda 90 down. I don't see any posts where it was resolved. How did you make out??

I did too ( think I posted on that thread too ).
Solution? I got used to it. Seriously, that was when both motor and boat were new and I was unfamilar with it. The 'whining' noise still exists but it's only when I am going at a good clip and the motor is trimmed in - which, now that I drive the boat a little differently since I've owned it awhile - is not common.

Thanks for getting back. My motor has 525 hours on it so being new is not an issue. It also seems to be getting worse as time goes on. I've read on other interet posts that air in the system might be the cause. Has anyone out there tried this solution??

It's hard to determine if we are talking about the same thing.
In my situation, at planing speeds ( the faster, the more prevalent the problem ), as I trim the motor in, i.e. bow down - say if I am approaching a boat wake - I hear a noise not unlike the sound of wind in hydro wires. I would NOT describe it as a squeeling or screaching, like a bad wheel bearing might sound.
I seriously believe this is some sort of resonating sound. As the stresses on the outboard change as I trim it, a natural resonance frequency develops and it whines. This is a bit of a reach but the type of sound it makes and the lack of any other explanation forthcoming, it's all I can come up with. I suppose it's fairly easy to test, changing the trim tab on the motor or say adding some weight to the motor somehow might change the resonance frequency. My guess is the resonating comes from the trim unit itself, specifically the guide shafts, simply for their symmetrical shape and precise design. Again, simply a semi-educated guess.
BTW, I noticed a drastic decrease in sound when I added a hydro-foil.

I experimented with the tilt this weekend. After greaseing everything I could see, I ran the motor up and down a few times and it did seem to get quieter. Next morning I went out to the boat and the sound was back. It happens with the motor in idle or at cruise speed...unfortunately I can only describe it as a screeching sound. On the plus side, it doesn't seem to affect the operation of the tilt or trim. I'm pulling the boat today to closer inspect it.

I think we're talking about two differnt things, unfortunately. Sounds to me like your problem has to do with the mechanism on the trim motro itself. Perhaps the water amplifies the sound hence the reason when on land it didnt sound so bad. Intriguing nonetheless. Let me know if and when you determine the cause.
