I know its got low hours and probably is not in top shape but I didnt pay alot for it in the deal and would very much like to bring it up as far as maintence as i dont know for sure what was done prior. what should a be good compression? are these gravity oil injected or is there a servicable pump like my vro evinrude also im going to put in a new water pump assy ,fuel pump assys and fiters beside from the lower unit seals and oil can you recommend anything else . thanks

Re: question for rodbolt yami 225

The compression will vary from cylinder to cylinder. 135 at 1 and 2 down to 125 at 5 and 6 would be normal due to the different port heights in the engine. The oil pump is mechanical and driven off the crankshaft in the engine. Make sure the valves in the oil lines are cleaned and the carbs serviced. If you show any signs of fuel restriction, have the engine mounted filter assy replaced. Not just the filter. Replacement of the fuel line from the tank to the engine would be a good idea. Have the fuel disconnect removed and the hose plumbed straight in to the filter. I am sure rodbolt will have other suggestions as well.

hello
yes
what Ray says plus change the t-stats and pressure valve grommet. pump the fuel from the tank. start with fresh gas. I dont trust low hour motors because they usually have the most neglect. also change the lower unit oil. clean all the filters. clean the oil tank and replace the remote oil tank filter. catch up on all the basics and that motor may just give you years of service, also carefully inspect the shift shaft while the lower unit is off. they had a tendancy to rust in saltwater in that year.
good luck with it and post us how it works out.

thanks ,ray and rodbolt ,do you no of any source other than the dealer for a factory service manual ?had no problem getting one for my evinrude but could source out one on the yamaha as i dont really like after/market ones.Is it best to use oem parts, filters and primer bulbs,t-stats etc and stay away from the after/market stuff ? from other posts sounds like i should also leave out those pencil zincs inside the motor rather than put in new? again thanks

You will need to order the manual from a dealer. I personally prefer the oem parts for most items. I do use some aftermarket parts such as gaskets with out any problem. Not saltwater country, but don't think I would tear apart powerhead to replace zincs. I have bought many saltwater powerheads which were advanced in age and saw no problems with the zincs in them. Good Luck, those are great motors when done right.
