What fuction does the grey wire have that is on one of the two yellow wire studs on a merc rectifier? 50hp 500 1979 merc

I'm not Silvertip but thats your tach input lead.

Since this boat never had a tach i guess i can remove it. It is in very bad shape. Instaling a new rec and hated to trace it and replace it.
