Question for the StarCult

My FIL has a '78 Supersport. It's a 18' 4cly I/O. I really like the boat and I think I'm going to start looking for one of my own for my next boat. Unless I finally get up the nerve to whack him over the head, it's going to be a while before I can get my hands on his.

Did SC offer this boat with a 6? He may just have a lazy prop on his, but I think the boat would perform a lot better with a couple extra pistons pumping. It's pretty sluggish as of now.

I know that the hulls didn't change much over the years on these so I'm wondering about the I/O options from year to year.

Thanks!

In '78 you could get the 18' SS with a 120 or 140 I/O either OMC or Merc for the lucky ones.

For what you want you would be on the lookout for the rare 22' SS. If you want options for power that's the hull to work with.

I'd favor an OB version myself but since you sound like you want an I/O you could get the Merc 470:eek: or a few others. I'd go with dual 120hp outboards personally.

Here's the brochure from '78 for reference.

Seriously, the 470 mercs have a bad reputation and they are out there for the brave souls to deal with. OB models are easily repowered.

Good luck and don't take out the old man, there's an SC out there somewhere for you:D

One more thing...as far as the rig being sluggish. It's probably got more to do with waterlogged foam than the motor lacking cylinders.

Other issues could be a bad prop, hull damage or even a rotten, heavy deck. 1978 was a long time ago...and the boat has probably been exposed to the elements at one time or another.

I - hopefully - will be putting my 18' Holiday in soon. It is a 1968 - but I bought an 1989 3.0 Liter - we will see. But I do agree - an OB - especially a 2 stroke will beat most I/O's. I had an 89 SeaRay - 16' weighed 1800 lbs - had a 110 merc OB - the thing would do 50! pull your arms out of your sockets - my cousin had the same boat with a 140 I/O - not even close.

BUT - the SC's hull weight is half - I am interested to see how she goes.!

Yeah get an outboard model. Why ruin the classic simplicity of an aluminum Starcraft with one of those horrible I/O's? :p

Yeah. I know he replaced the deck in the past (several) years. But he has a tendency to over-do everything so I wonder what the new deck is and what he over-did to it!!

I have an OB boat now and it's best feature is the motor. I might consider keeping my power and looking for another hull. I'm just more comfortable with the 4-strokes and I hate the oil mix ordeal.

I love this forum by the way. I don't even own a SC (yet) and I find myself lurking in here most of the time!

That brochure sample is exactly what I needed. Thanks!!!

Ya - but when I put the blower on the I/O with straight pipes out the back of the transom....
