Question for you old OMC Salts

Back in the days of the 90 hp derivative of the fat 50 V4 (I think Johnny called it a Meteor), Evinrude made a trihull I/O. You could buy it with several engines. As I recall one was a 155 hp Buick V6 4 stroke, and one had this 90 hp 4 cylinder 2 stroke powerhead.

Since that was the days when the OMC team carried the gas station with them and their 2 strokes, any comments on fuel consumption diffeerences between the two types of engines offered (2 vs 4 stroke) on that boat?

Been wondering about this ever since I saw them advertised and just now thought to ask about it.

I remember that boat. I only saw it with the IO. --a real wave slapper--but pretty.

The 90 was barely adequate and noisy. The V-6 is by far the better choice. I don't think I'd ever buy the 2-stroke version. Fuel consumption was probably pretty close, but I'll bet the 155 uses a little more.

In considering the hp difference, Willy, you're probably right, but in considering engine efficiency, it may have been the other way. I just never could see a 2 stroke in an I/O application; at least back then. Course today, my engine of choice is OB.

I had a '65 120 hp Mercruiser with the little Chevy 4 banger and it was smooth, quiet, and sipped gas. Really liked that engine.

I had a 1971 evinrude explorer with the 155...Fun boat!
It was ok on fuel but not as good as you might think for an IO.

Geez I didn't know the thread would get this kind of following. I remember seeing the bat boat back in those days. Looks like a lot of thought went into the design of the hull.

Some really gorgeous restorations.
