OK, learning the engine & drive on the boat I just bought- i'm getting ready to replace impeller on the outdrive.

I have the manual I got from here, been reading links, even watched a video on youtube, so I think I have a pretty good handle on it.

Only part I'm not sure of, I know I have to have the shift shaft on the gearcase set to forward when I reinstall, but do I have to have the control lever at the driver's seat set in forward from the start as well, so the connecting part of the intermediate shift shaft is in forward, and stays in forward?

It doesn't look too much harder than replacing the impeller on my OB, but on that a little turn of the flywheel and the splines just pop in place.

Yes on a MC you ALWAYS go to forward gear anytime you pull any of the outdrive. The shift shoe should be facing forward and you can put a little back pressure maybe with a bungie to hold in F when reinstalling.

just pull the whole drive (upper and lower) and split em on your bench (drive stand)

this will give you a chance to familiarize yourself with some more routine maintenance for your transom/drive assy like:

-engine alignment/coupler condition
-bellows inspection
-u-joint and gimabl bearing inspection/greasing
-pressure testing your drive after water pump service
-etc...(you get the picture)

Just did mine for the first time last night, that is first time on an I/O. Read and follow instructions in the manual, and yes remove the outdrive, it makes the job easier. If at all possible have a helper to hold the arm in forward gear while lowering the upper and they can also help line up the water pipe. Mine was done in less than two hours and I really took my time on this first replacement double checking everything.

I usually just pull the lower unless there is a need to pull the upper. It makes it easy to back together with the lower at the forward angle it will slide and stay in forward.
