I just took possesion of a 1974 Glastron GT-160 project boat - no motor. All of a sudden I found for sale a 1974 115 Johnson for $1,500.00 supposed to be running. First I would need to be sure it is the right fit but found another post here from someone that had a 1974 GT-160 with a 1974 115 Johnson on it. So my question is first the price (Sounds a little high) and is this year a good motor? I'm not a mechanic so I'm kind of running blind on this one. Was't looking to get a motor right now as I only have had my new project for two days now........ Any input would be helpful........

Thanks, Don in Virginia

I think that the price sounds high, but if it is a good running motor what else can you find in that range. They are good solid motors, but their design life for parts is only form 73-77. If you can find one in the 79-90's range the parts availability is much better for used parts. You can still buy most parts for that motor though. If you are trying to do a vintage restoration that motor may well be owrth looking hard at.

Re: Question on 1974 115 hp Johnson

The weaknesses are primarily due to the fact that the series does not adapt to parts used in more recent models such as the power tilt and trim system. The gearcase and gearcase linkage, engine block, cooling system, and even the flywheel will not upgrade to more recent parts than 1977.

I would not expect to pay 1500 unless everything were complete and working well including all controls and a working PT&T plus you should have some limited warranty.

Thanks........

I would prefer to do a vintage resto and will look into the one for sale. I have an Evinrude/Johnson repair shop that has been in business a long time. The owner is getting on in age but they really know their stuff. They completely re-built my 1984 Evinrude 100 hp V4 Commercial which has performed great with 420 hours of run time on it now. I'm using it on the 19' Manatee.

I will be contacting him today regarding this engine for sale........

I have taken the 150 hp Merc off the GT and was wondering if it would have anyvalue for parts etc. Serial #3917822 Don't know the year but it has been sitting on the GT outside for about 5 years.

Will be reporting back and thanks again,

Don H.

Good motor, too high a price.

Gotta agree with ezeke though....what you REALLY want to find is a 135.

I'd get the 135 and divorce papers!!

Got a report that the lower unit had some corrosion/leak issues if in salt water and yes the price is way out of line........Of course they don't answer or return phone calls after they place the ad............

As was mentioned above, since the lower is one of the harder to obtain parts then the price is WAY out of line. That thing is worth $500 and that's assuming other than the lower unit issues it runs awesome.
