My brother has an '82 70hp mercury. does anyone know if the block of the 70 is a de-tuned 90 or a suped up 50? He's considering repowering, but if he can do a simple carb upgrade and get more power, he might not have to.

Even a website that has the specs for the product line would be usefull.

Thanks,
Nav

its more than just a carb upgrade. its jets, carb throats, exhaust tuning, porting, timing, and much more, usually its in the exhaust, and if you can change the exhaust of a 2 stroke block cheaper than you can buy a bigger motor to begin with, have at it !

Re: Question on 1982 Mercury Product Line

The 1982 70hp was its own, unique motor. There were no other models made off that powerhead, although in earlier versions it was rated at 65hp, and later versions it was rated at 60hp. - after the industry wide switch to rating at the powerhead. The 70hp was a 3-cylinder 49-cube model and shared internal components with the 2-cylinder 33-cube, the four cylinder 66-cube models, and the 99-cube inline sixes.. The 70hp was already tweaked pretty highly and there wasn't a whole lot you could do to them to push the envelope, short of finding an old 650XS triple intake, etc...
- Scott

Thanks Chinewalker, thats what I had expected.

It was just a thought worth considering since we've upgraded an old Merc to the higher hp before.

The motors got great compression and has little use on it. Its just a bit on the weak side for the application.

Thanks,
Nav

Hi Navigator,
If the motor's not what you need, then sell/trade for what you do need. Who know's, you might just find a little-old-lady with a 115 that scared the be-jeepers out of her and would LOVE to have a little less power.
Good luck!
- Scott
