Hi Folks,
My 73 steury has anti fouling on the hull,i would like to paint the hull down to the part where it tucks under the boat,I just dont like the look of the antifouling on the side of the boat.Under it and the bow i can deal with.I'm limited on cash and was wondering about the rustoleum marine paint .I plan on sanding the hull but not all the way down.would the rustoleum blister, the boat will only be on the water a day at atime except for a week during summer.the top half gel coat is in good shape with nice color.
thanks
Matt

Hello Schalmat and welcome to Iboats..

Wow..who would put AF on there topsides ???

Anywho.. You might consider using a stripper to remove the bulk of it before sanding.

Your final grit would be dertermined by what paint you use.

I dont think Rusto can be in the water for a week at a time though.

Re: question on anti fouling paint

Rust-oleum or almost any other paint will be fine on a trailered boat... most of the finer topsides paint mfgrs like Interlux also say their topside paints will do fine on a boat's bottom if it's not left in for more than a couple days at a time.

People here have reported leaving boats painted with auto paint, among others, in for weeks at a time with no problem.

Re: question on anti fouling paint

After thinking about this more..

You could put the boat in the water..mark a few inches above your water line..take out of water..tape where you marked..strip to the line..finish with rusto or anything you want :) That way you have no paint in the water. Just Bottom paint..

Re: question on anti fouling paint

Sorry, they didnt paint the topside, only the bottom 6 inches of the hull and the bottom,I just want to paint from the very bottom edge up to the rub line.I'll leave the rest of the anti fouling on there.Just not sure what to paint it with.I'll try to post a pic of the boat, may or may not work. The top side is a medium green, its a little oxidized.I went out and used some comet and water with a sock and did the back upper portion, after which i put a little mothers gold wax on it and hit it with the buffer,Came out looking like new.what is the correct sealer or marine wax to use on this to protect the shine?

Re: question on anti fouling paint

Sorry for the terminology misunderstanding..

Topsides are from the rubrail down to the chine..Which is what I was posting about..

Bottom is chine down..

Deck is rubrail up..

Again..strip it off ( Interstrip .. or try some HD stripper if you like ) then sand/prep and paint. The paint is your choice but remember that any paint other then top end marine Could .. possibly start to blister if left in more then a few days ( so your summer week of submersion could .. maybee .. possibly blister ).

Nice boat :)
