I pulled the lower unit tonight. I put it in forward before dropping. During regular maintenance I moved shaft around from forward to reverse. I am ok as long as make sure it is in forward gear before reinstalling, right ?

Yep ,to confirm, the finger on the drive must point fore and aft, as must the receiving notch in the bell housing. Otherwise theyll hit each other and drive will not go past that jam-up point.

If you keep the control handle all the way forward, and you rotate the shift shaft (in the lower) all the way clockwise, and it points straight ahead, the upper ss and the lower ss should mate correctly and you should be OK.

when you say you "pulled the lower unit" do you mean you pulled the entire outdrive off, or split the outdrive in half. On that point what exactly are you working on. I"m guessing its an alpha drive, if you pulled the whole drive then what was said above is true, if your talking about dropping the lower IE splitting the drive, then you need to turn the splined shaft on the lower so that the propeller locks and turns the driveshaft when spun in the counter clockwise direction

Re: question on being in forward gear

If you split the drive in forward, and moved the lower unit to reverse while working on it that is ok as long as you put the lower back in forward when you go to reinstall it. :)

If you turn the propeller counter-clockwise while in forward the drive shaft should turn. Thats how you can tell the lower is in forward.

Reverse is the opposite turning the prop clockwise will turn the driveshaft.

Sorry for the confusion
