Question on dropping lower unit on 2004 25hp 4 stroke Bigfoot

Anybody know how & where to disconnect the shift shaft on this motor? The upper end is pinned into a shifting mechanism that looks like a nightmare to take apart and the attachment point at the lower unit seems to be inaccessable as well. Lower unit is loose but can't disconnect the shift rod/shaft - help!

This is one of the many diagrams in the OEM service manual for your motor. You NEED the manual if you are going to work on it.

Thanks Don. Its a friends motor who asked me to change out the impeller. Usually thats a no brainer not requiring a manual but this is a strange one. Your drawing somewhat confirms that the rod has to be disconnected at the top.
