Question on Glastron 175

I looked at a used 2001 Glastron 175 today at a local marine dealership. The boat is in good shape overall, but I was surprised to see a Chevy block motor in it. The outdrive is Volvo. I asked the salesman if that is the original motor, and he said that he would guess so - that Volvo uses all GM blocks.

I'm not too knowlegeable on engines - but that sounded like something I want to check out.

Does that sound right to you? Could a boat have come from Glastron with a Volvo outdrive and a chevy 3.0L engine ?

Thanks for any information!

Re: Question on Glastron 175

It doesn't matter whether you buy Volvo or Mercruiser -- It will be driven by a GM engine. The 3.0, 4.3 V6, 5.0, 5.7 and the big block V8 motors are all GM.

Re: Question on Glastron 175

Thanks!

So, that doesn't mean that the engine was replaced at some point? i.e. it is most likely an original engine?

I am in NY - but this boat was previously registered in Indiana and Florida. I don't know how big of a deal that is...the boat looks really clean to me, and the dealership offers a 30 day, in-season warranty on the motor and outdrive. I'm just nervous not knowing the boat's history..

Thanks again.

Re: Question on Glastron 175

What made me notice/question the engine is that every Volvo engine I've seen had red parts. This engine was completely black. When I asked the salesman about it, he said, yea, it's a Chevy block; Volvo uses all GM blocks.

I just thought it seems weird - but, again, I'm not too knowlegeable about engines.

Does that seem out of place to anyone else?

No, this one is right in town.

Everyone's comments on my last thread convinced me to stay local...

Re: Question on Glastron 175

I doubt anyone would have changed engine type on this boat- if there was a problem and the block had to be changed they would have used the same manufacturer, most likely. Go for it if the sea trial is good and you are comfortable with it. I think you will be covered pretty well with a warranty.

Re: Question on Glastron 175

Even if the original engine had a problem that required an engine change, a different brand of engine would not typically be used just because of the expense and complexity involved. Engines are not standard so mounting, exhaust, electrical, fuel systems etc., are all different. That boat has the correct engine. If it's what you want and passes the survey, go for it.

As I understand it, the difference in merc or volvo is the stern drive, not so much the engine itself
