Question on overheating

I bought a 92 Celebrity w/ yamaha 4.3 inboard. The first time out the temp ran up to 200 deg. so I shut the engine off. After we got back home I checked both water pumps and flushed all the hoses and everything seem to be fine but the temp. still continued to rise. After somemore digging I found there was no thermostat in the engine. The engine was just resealed so I dont know if it was left out accidentally or intentionally. Anyway, the way the cooling hoses are run this engine will not run without a thermostat. Well its at a service center just as a precautionary check and a 140 degree thermostat install. Could i have hurt the engine running without a thermostat?

Re: Question on overheating

People will pull a thermostat sometimes because the engine is running hot, instead of finding out why the engine is running hot. Running an engine without a thermostat will only keep the engine from heating up.
How did you check both water pumps?

Took the raw pump off and took it to the service center. They said it looked brand new which the seller said he had replaced it. Ran the engine with the hoses off the circulatory pump and had alot of water flow there. Back flushed all the hoses with no restrictions.
