I was offered a GREAT deal and am thinking of trading my old in-line 6 Mercury 115 in for an Evinrude 140 (mid-late 80's model). I was just wondering, what is everyones take on this motor? I wana know the good......the bad......and the ugly from anyone who owns, or has owned, one of these motors. The motor in question will come with a brand new rebuild and will come with a 60 day guarantee. Thanks for your opinions in advance.

These motors were very sturdy and dependable. Like all motors of that era, they used more gas than today's, but the important thing is that they kept running. I guess this is why the design lasted so long. Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll get more opinions.

Had one. Great motor. Never a lick of trouble.

Ditto all the above. One thing I have always admired about the OMC engines is that if you knew a little about them and they broke down, you could usually get them going again and get home. If you decide to get it, go out and get the OEM service manual for it and really read it. Lots of good stuff in them.

Papasage..... Having been an OMC technician since 1960, I do of course praise their engines above all others. If you are purchasing the boat & engine via a dealership which will offer some kind of warranty, that is one thing.

However, if the purchase is from an individual, and although he/she may be the local preacher in town, I would strongly advise you to have the engine checked over by a trusted and knowledgeable OMC mechanic. OMC has always been at the top of the reliable, top quality list in my opinion... but they are a mechanical item, which if neglected can be reduced to a problematic piece of hardware.

If a private party is involved, and if the present owner balks at having the engine checked out as mentioned, I'd suggest you walk away from it. Hopefully all goes well for you.

If this is a post '85 V4 140hp.,I believe it's a loop-charged engine. If it is, I wish I had it.

c/6

Hooty

I'm not sure but read information on whether the VRO has a "not working" horn. Others in this forum can advise you better. Besides that great engine.
