Hi all, Alpha one Gen 2 drive behind 4.3 carbed 2003 setup.
This will be my first impeller replacement.
Thanks to everyone here and especially Don S. for many awesome write-ups. I saw the one about impeller replacement. I also have copies of the various shop manuals too.
My question is the mention of using "perfect seal" on the lower small holed gasket. Do I run a bead around the under side of that gasket? or both under and upper sides? And why only that gasket?
Oh, the marina tried to sell me the much more expensive impeller kit that also included the water pump body. I thought this was only necessary if you had the plastic body. Am I being cheap? Or should I not fool around and just get the more expensive kit?
Thanks,
Joe

I think the gasket seal is used to keep the gasket in place during assembly.
If you insist on using the sealant, apply to one side only.
Gluing both sides is going to make disassembly difficult in the future.

I do not add any sealant to any gaskets in the water pump.
A light smear of 2-4-C grease on the gaskets adds stickiness for assembly.

The outside of the pump is in the water flow of the exhaust stream heading out the prop.
Any small Drip,Drip water leak out of the pump body will be insignificant and undetectable.

Inspect your pump Housing, If it isn't extremely worn, reuse it. They should last for many years.
If yours is still the original from 2003, it may be due for replacement, but you should not need a new one every year.

All Gen II water pump housings are the same and they are SS, never came out with plastic. That was only the previous models, and never was a SS available.. I also never use any form of gasket sealer on either the base plate gasket or the housing gasket, not the leg bell-housing gasket either, but I do glue the rubber ring in. :)

Another question...sorry.
There is mention of putting Quicksilver Perfect Seal on the threads of the housing bolts.
I've seen videos where some guys don't put anything and I've seen some where they put anti-sieze.
What do you guys do?

A good waterproof grease. My preference is a product called 'aqualube'. Never use anything with a nickel or copper base.
