Question on Winch Ratings

In a discussion with a friend he said:
"I was told that a winch rating is what it will pull up a 30 deg Horizontal slope, not what it will lift vertically (The weight is on rollers to minimize friction).
If my math is correct that means a 2000 lb winch will only lift (maybe) 1000 lbs vertically"

Anyone have any comments on this? Is this correct

Thanks fellow boaters,

You give nowhere close to enough information to make any sort of a determination about a particular winches performance under varying conditions.

What service factor are you requiring?

FWIW: A person?s arm strength is typically the limiting factor in winch performance. Design wise, a winch will pull a far more than your typical human can input

Re: Question on Winch Ratings

Well, The idea was to use the winch as a vertical hoist - boat weight approx 1400 lbs. Just wondered if there was a formula - i.e weight of object (boat)would = xxxxlb winch. This would be a DC winch. Apologies dingbat - should have incl that.

Doesn't matter, vertical or horizontal, 2000 lbs of pull is 2000 lbs of pull.

The difference is in the service factors involved. Ratings run from 1 x the load to 4-8 times the load for lifts used for human transportation

Re: Question on Winch Ratings

A winch (by law) is rated by the "Rated Line Pull". The actual number of pounds the winch and cable can safely pull. If your winch is rated for 2000 lbs then that is the how much it can pull, the direction its being pulled makes no differeance. (NOTE: Assumes the winch and cable are in a good state of repair.)

Now if you are asking would I walk under a load suspended that way? Probably not... But then I won't knowingly walk under any suspended load that could crush me if things went bad. ;)

Not quite... Winches rated for vertical lifting are quite a bit different. A boat winch might be rated to PULL 2000 pounds, but that doesn't mean the brake system is anywhere close to capable of actually HOLDING 2000 pounds. Its rated with the assumption that once you quit cranking, most of the load is going to also stop.

Re: Question on Winch Ratings

Thanks Guys. You talk to some of these auto suppliers and you sure get some weird answers.
To alleviate any fears...Thanks Bubba......lol - were gonna buy a 3500 winch.

I did mention that we intended to use the winch Vertically - they were "unsure" - whatever that meant.

Re: Question on Winch Ratings

I'd have to look it up but it's in OSHA in the US and LOLER regs in the UK.
OSHA is a compliance organization. They have nothing to do with writing standards. The Standards and definitions would have been written and administered by SAE or ASME.

In this case, see SAE technical standard J1853_200810 - Hand Winches-Boat Trailer Type
