I posted a variation of this question in the Cobia section with no replies, but I was looking for some general impressions regarding the hull of this boat and probable performace with a mid 70s Merc inline 1500? Is this hull sort of a modified V, and do you think 40 MPH with that setup would be realistic? I just purchased the boat and will add modern steering, carpet and the engine and guages to complete the project. Thanks for the replies!

Re: question re: hull/performance

a 40 with that would be the slow boat to no where. i've had 2 of them. they are one of the best all round boats i have ever had. one with a 115 Johnny, other 1350 merc. the 1500 will make a great combo. with the 155 it ran about 40mph the 135 arond 45 mph. get your engine height about av palte about 1 - 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of the hull.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Also, with your 1350/Cobia, did you have the power trim pump in the engine compartment and if so was there adequate room (I have the older style power trim)?

Re: question re: hull/performance

with the built in tank, you have all the area on each side and under the motor well. there are suppose to be drop down jump seats in the stearn, hinged to the fiberglass, and when use the seat lifts up, and an aluminum leg hold them up. ebay back to back seats with the 10 in base work great in that boat. iwould pull what ever he has on the floor and finish it with gel coat. no carpet. with the 115, we were able to pull 4 adults each on a pair of skis, from a deep water start. never tried it with the 135o.

Tashasdaddy,

Thanks for all the help and ideas - much appreciated. It sounds like you had a good experience with the Cobias that you had. Just curious, what happened to the Tower of Power?

Nice little boat 2cycle. Being a bow rider, it was kind of avant-garde for a '72 model. Hope all his workmanship was as good as the pictures make it look.
