Not enough prop! Rpm range is 4500-5500. You need a bigger prop. 19" will bring you down appox. ... 300 to 400 rpm, possibly give you maybe... 2 more mph.

That exra 2.5 MPH is going to be hard to get.

Maybe a 19" if you plan to run light.

Understand the RPM range before "assuming" it's a Holy mistake to run over 5500.
I ran my 97 115 up to 6500RPM...doesn't mean I cruise there.
IMO, 58-5900 is about right, but Dhadley is looking for wheel-type which makes a lot of difference on what you can do, so lets hear what ya got there.

im currently running a OMC SST 17 pitch its had teflon removed, slight polishing with no dings or rough edges.the motor feels very sweet at that rpm .i dont want to buy another prop yet with some input around here its hard to get a borrowed prop.

Re: question re set up crossflow for dhadley

OK, the SST is typically a stern-lifter and doesn't really let the bow come up and cut loose even with the use of trim.
I would recommend you stay with 3-blade, and if you are going to consider a new SS prop, I would look real close for a 13.5X18 OMC Raker, or possibly a Turbo.
I have a good bit of experience with the Raker on a 115, but your set-up will determine the best end-result.
The Raker will pull about 200RPM lower, but may allow lifting the eng. by one hole.

Everone that I have talked to that has run both turbo and raker has said that the turbo runs a couple of mph slower than the raker of the same size. My friendly prop shop seems to think it is sacreligious to mention them both in the same sentence.

Yep. The Turbo runs at a different X dimension than the Raker. As a matter of fact a Stiletto will run higher than a Raker.

Dont get me wrong -- a Raker is a great prop. But - the Turbo has a lot more bite. If you run a Raker and a Turbo at the same (Raker) height, the Raker will probably be a good choice.

If you want to spend the time to dial in your rig, I'd guarntee you that the Turbo is faster, quicker and more efficient unless that your hull has enough hook to negate the technology in the Turbo.

Re: question re set up crossflow for dhadley

boston2 -- I'm afraid the 20 Raker might be a bit steep. I know we could take some bite out to gain rpm but I dont like doing that. I'd rather shoot for an 18 and add bite if we had to. Adding efficiency is better than taking it out.

Truthfully I'm not a big fan of the Ballistic. They arent designed for the same market as a Stiletto or Turbo. If you cant get hooked up with a Turbo guy in your area, e-mail me at dhadley50@aol.com. We'll get you hooked up, no problem. Use "Turbo" as the subject.

Boilermaker -- good question, glad you brought it up. Stilettos are aimed at the replacement market. They work well on most sterndrives where you cannot adjust the X dimension height. They work very well on most outboards as well without a lot of time investment.

Turbo's are aimed at the higher end market. We use them on boats that we're looking for maximum overall performance. People who are willing to "dial it in" to get that last mph. naturally Turbos cost a tad more than Stilettos.

In the prop world the old saying is very true -- "you get what you pay for". No matter what brand prop youre talking about.

I would shoot for 5800 rpm with an average load with your V4 cf.

Re: question re set up crossflow for dhadley

Ok you have your baseline with your existing prop. Put the Turbo on and test. Make notes to compare to your baseline. Rpm, speed water pressure and overall "feel". Time to plane, time between rpm or speed ranges. How much trim etc.

Then raise the motor some. Test again. Compare those results. If all goes well and you gain efficiency, rasie the motor some more.

Once you get your optimum height, you can try setbacks.

Keep us posted!
