I'll try to take them out and clean and rebuild them so that I'm sure all is O.K. but thanks that is what I needed to know on the lake when I got stuck.

I have been reading and studying a repair manual and found that maybe the motor I have is not 150 hp and is 115 hp. Im confused because the serial number does not match any provided on the internet or in the manual. The serial number is 4700425 and I dont know what year or hp this motor is. I thought I knew because when I ordered some part they asked me for it and told me but I think they are wrong wrong. I need to know for sure, do you know how to match this serial number to a motor. thanks.

Re: question

FYI

It is much easier to follow the logic when you reply to existing topic message, rather than starting a new one:

Topic: 1977 mercury 150 hp inline six

Unfortunately both the 115 and 150 hp inline 6 motors show as 1977 for that serial number range.

Re: question

its my first time on something like this, your right, hopefully I wont do that again. I found what my motor is;its a 1977 115 hp L6 mercury. I am trying to replace the stator but you need a flywheel holder to remove the bolt and a fly wheel puller which I dont have and dont know were to get it. Do you have any idea were I could buy or rent something like this. Thanks.

Re: question

Some people use A rope to hold the flywheel. Im not sure about A puller.I think you could make one. You Wrap the rope around the flywheel and wedge it some how to hold it. Tim

Re: question

To avoid damage to the flywheel the correct puller MUST be used. Cheaper to pay a dealer to pull the flywheel than to buy a puller or risk damage.

-W

Re: question

Thank you guys, I will do that! I'll try to ask the mechanic if I could borrow those tools, or if not I'll have him pull it for a fee. I've ordered the carb kits, the floats, and the fuel pump rebuild kit. Thanks again.

Re: question

I learned that my problem could also be with the stator. The reason is it has a low and high end, so the motor idles ok on the low end but once the throttle is advanced under pressure of water the high end is not working properly thus stalling the motor.
