I know this may sound stupid to some but what does OMC stand for. I have a merc 140 and it says omc on the block and gm on the head, is it chevy, ford or what. Also is it quality or crap? Just wondering cause i see it alot on the threads.

Aside from a few things, the basic GM block is the same.Merc is black, OMC is blue.exaust and risers are different,front and rear mounts different. shift system is different, ESA vs micro-switch. AS LONG AS THERE SERVICED, there both good.

OMC and Mercruiser (and Volvo Penta and others) have all used the same 140HP- 4 cylinder GM motor at one time or another.
Someone blew the Mercruiser engine in your boat and replaced it with the OMC one.
Pretty common practice.

So, you have a blue GM engine, that replaced the same GM engine, but black.
