I just bought a 1990 four winns 190 freedom. It has a 4.3 omc cobra engine 190 hp. Im new to this engine so my questions are:

1. Ive read about similar boats getting up to or over 50 mph with this engine. I can only get up to 45mph according to GPS with 3 people in the boat. What can i do to make it go faster.

2. When pulling a skier it seems sluggish trying to get them up out of the water avg. person 5'11 200lbs. once they are up the boat just takes off. So I think my problem is getting out of the gate quicker any suggestions?

3. The throttle seems like it needs to be greased up its rough moving it forward or backwards. Is this something that needs to be done or just replaced?

4. What type of prop would be best to have on it?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Re: questions about 1990 four winns?

Hello.

Welcome to the Four Winns subforum.

That is a good boat with a good powerplant. I agree is should be a little faster.

Your questions aren't really Four Winns specific.

Questions 1 & 2 are directly related to question 4. You will be best off asking those questions in the prop sub forum

Question 3 would be best asked in the I/O sub forum. It is possibly that the linkage at the motor needs grease. However, it is also possible tha the cables themselves are rusted and need to be replaced.

I have the same engine in my 88 H-200...I found the performance really improved when I went from a 14.5x19 prop to a 15x17 prop....
As far as the throttle issue it sounds like you need to have your transom shift cable replaced...if the shifting is stiff...

I'm trying to replace my 15x17 back to 14.5x19, Lou.
How was it better?
Didn't U loose some top end speed though?

Re: questions about 1990 four winns?

Well what I found was that with the 14 1/2 x 19 it didn't reach the max rpms as specified in the manual for the V-6 4bbl, I was only getting 4200 rpms and spec was 4600-4800...with the 15 x 17 it easily reaches 4700...
I looked around on the 4 Winns site and found that performance specs given for various models with different engines...and the 200 Horizon/205 Sundowners with the 4.3 were supposed to come with the 15 x 17...mine had the wrong prop for YEARS....

http://assets1.fourwinnsmarketing.com/past_product/specs//1990/17 205 Sundowner (p38-40).pdf

I used the 1990 specs even though mine is an 88 because the 200 Horizon and 205 Sundowner hulls were the same from about 88-92...same hull for both by the way...also the 201 Liberator used that hull in the same time frame...anyway the boat performs way better with the 15 x 17....
